What is Developmental Language Disorder (DLD)?

Developmental Language Disorder is a common Speech and Language disorder that can affect some pupils in most classes.

DLD can impact on a child’s speech sounds, understanding of language and use of language.

Here are some strategies to support your child with DLD

  • Give the child your full attention.
  • Use pictures and written notes to support their understanding.
  • Get the child’s attention before talking.
  • Explain the meaning of new words.
  • Help the child put sentences together to tell a story.
  • Allow the child plenty of time to respond.
  • Encourage children to ask questions when they don’t understand.
  • Praise all attempts at communication.
