Malcolm Alexander

9th Feb 2021

It is with great sadness that we acknowledge the passing of our much loved and highly respected building caretaker of 28 years has, Mr Malcolm Alexander. Malcolm fell into poor health almost two years ago, and sadly, these past few months his illness challenged him. Despite this Malcolm kept his spirits up and was determined to do everything possible to get better. Sadly, that was not to be and we extend our deepest sympathy to his wife Donna, son Jake, grandsons Dale and Jarlath, their mother, Roisin, his father Jim, brother Ian and family circle.

For all of his 28 years as building caretaker Malcolm faithfully and expertly kept Sion Mills Primary School in an excellent state of repair and sparklingly clean. Visitors to our school always remarked on how well kept the building is, and that requires constant cleaning as well as vigilance towards regular maintenance. As part of his role Malcolm liaised with the Education Authority (EA) Grounds Maintenance Team, Building Maintenance (interior and exterior) and Health & Safety. Personnel from all of these teams held Malcolm in the highest regard, not only because he did his job to the highest standard but thanks to his amazing memory he knew the routeway for every electrical, plumbing or telephone conduit in the attic or underground! Malcolm knew where everything was in Sion Mills Primary School and was infamous among the staff as the gatekeeper of all that should not be wasted. In addition to these qualities Malcolm had a wonderful sense of humour that endeared him to both pupils and staff alike. His retirement was a loss to our school community, but until recently he was a regular caller. We will miss him immensely. May he rest in peace.
